l nome poi durante il fascismo venne italianizzato in
Splendido. Quando riaprì nel dopoguerra, i primi a frmare
il registro degli ospiti furono il Duca di Windsor e la moglie
Wallis. Solo l’inizio di un lungo elenco di presenze illustri:
Lauren Bacall e Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor e Richard
Burton, Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Catherine Deneuve, Liza
Minelli fno a Madonna che un anno fa ha celebrato qui il suo
compleanno.
Lo Splendido nei vari passaggi ha perso l’appellativo
di Grand Hotel perché infatti non lo è. La sua posizione
sommamente panoramica, il suo elitario isolamento, la sua
solida architettura mediterranea ne fanno più una elegante
dimora patrizia che un opulento hotel cittadino. L’impressione
è quella di essere a casa. Lo staf è cordiale e il servizio
attento senza divenire oppressivo. La cucina è tipicamente
mediterranea. Il menu ofre molto pesce sulla cui freschezza
non si transige. Piatti anche semplici come una spigola al sale
diventano un trionfo di sapore.
Per chi preferisce un’atmosfera più informale c’è lo
Splendido Mare, proprio in piazzetta. Dalla terrazza della Suite
Ava Gardner si domina la baia e si abbraccia con lo sguardo
questo scampolo di paradiso. Pochi luoghi hanno conservato
così intatto nel tempo nel tempo il loro fascino.

period and became Splendido. When it reopened
in the post-war period, the first to sign the register
of the illustrious guests was the Duke of Windsor and his
wife, Wallis. This was only the beginning of a long list of
illustrious presences: Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart,
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Clark Gable, Ava
Gardner, Catherine Deneuve, Lisa Manelli up to Madonna,
who here, a year ago, celebrated her birthday.
The Splendid in the various passages has lost the name
Grand Hotel because, in fact, it is not. Its very panoramic
position, its élite isolation, it solid Mediterranean
architecture make it more of an elegant patrician abode
than an opulent city hotel. The impression is that of being
in a home. The staff is cordial and the service attentive
without becoming oppressive. The cuisine is typically
Mediterranean. The menu offers a lot of fish for which
freshness is a must. Dishes as simple as a trout baked in
salt becomes a triumph of flavour.
For those who prefer a more informal atmosphere,
there is The Splendido Mare. Right in the town square.
From the terrace of the Ava Gardner Suite, one overlooks
the bay and the eye can embrace this remnant of paradise.
